Sweet Lovers Love The Spring...

In spring time,
In spring time,
In spring time,
The only pretty ring time,
When birds do sing,
Hey ding-a-ding, ding,
Hey ding-a-ding, ding,
Sweet lovers love the spring.

It Was A Lover And His Lass [Listen]
Traditional, (via Thomas Morley & William Shakespeare, As You Like It)

Is it any surprise that Valentine's Day is so carefully positioned right on the cusp of spring? The great mating season, when the land comes back to life. Saw my first crocus and dandelions today, the first of the tet-a-tet were up with the dew. The bird song is getting to the top of its crescendo. Mind you, trying to get to sleep at 7.30am, I would think that... ;)

Indeed it was believed in the past that birds choose their mates on that day. Chaucer said, "For this was Seynt Valentine's Day when every foul cometh ther to choose his mate."...

Crocus & Daffodils

I always seem to know more Saggi's than anyone else, and by my reckoning mid-november to mid-december corresponds to an active late february/march... Must be something in the water, extra minerals from the thaw no doubt.

Personally, I think love to be too important to celebrate specially on one day. It is the greatest thing we have, and thus should be rejoiced in as such every day you draw breath. Anyhow, my feelings on love have been documented here before.

There is much love in me for some that will read this, hope they know. Some days the trials of the unrequited can be a heavy burden. To all of you, I hope this is not one of those days.

The Springtime
The Springtime, Pierre Auguste Cot

Throw me a line, help me to find
Something to cling to
When the loneliness haunts me
When the bitterness taunts me
When the emptiness eats me.

Lay me low...

  • :)

Many thanks dear ladies, your thoughts mean the world to me.

Glad you liked it Steph. :) Chaucer was a master, few people are still widely read many hundreds of years after they have departed.

  • "Many thanks dear ladies, your thoughts mean the world to me."

Karl you seriously need to get out more, why don't you go out and get a real girlfriend instead of talking to them like some kind of fruit?

  • I'm behind you 100% Orb. Do your thing. Again, a beautifully crafted post worthy of framing.

To be unrequited is such sweet sorrow.

  • Talk to them like some kind of fruit?

You must really like your fruit. I do too.

No, I do not believe love will come to me, optimism is not my strong suit.

Give love, and you may get love... talk about love on the internet, and you'll remain safe.

Besides, love isn't about getting physical with people - perfectly possible to express it over a distance.

    Thanks Grover. :)

  • Karl you talk like some 60 year old bloke whos accompanied a lot in life...at your age shouldent you be thinking about getting a gf, living on your own and working?

How do you expect to meet anyone if you don't work and get out more?

I'm not really bothered about the love situation atm anyways, that can wait :) Tis better to have friends

Agreed, as you imply, I've still got plenty of time for that, just like you. :)

  • Orbling,
Continue to be just as you are, you're perfect. Do you go to college, work, or are you attending the school of life, or all three?
Did you read Chaucer's Canterbury Tales? We had to in school. Pretty interesting actually, not at the time but looking back they were.
Speaking of choosing a mate...Lucy and Ricky are inseperable. If I hold Lucy, Ricky has a fit. He is always looking out for a predator and lets her eat, drink, and bathe first. Ricky even bites my dogs to keep them out of 'their' backyard. My dogs are terrified of them.
So, have you ever been in love? Why are you so afraid, Orbling?

  • whoa karl look whats turned up...get in there my son!

By Blogger Andrew, at Tuesday, February 22, 2005 6:38:00 pm

  • Firstly, Andrew, don't be so base. Honestly.

Perfect? I'm such a very long way from that. Though I will continue to be me. Fortunately, (or perhaps unfortunately, depends how you see it), I've never been affected much by peer pressure. Hence the rather unusual person presented to the world today.

As for the questions, college, university, done that. Love education, so stayed for a long time, left after I graduated from my master's though. Didn't want to work for the uni's, so didn't bother with a doctorate. Darn, Dr Karl would've sounded cool. Well... sad, but it would've been fun.

The School of Life is something everyone should spend as much time in as possible. I'm a diligent pupil of said school, and learn a great deal from it. :)

I did read some Chaucer at school, I remember not paying much attention - but thinking it was fairly interesting. I never worked in English, or much else, I was [am] a lazy git. Would love to reread that actually, it's bound to be in the house somewhere, most books are. :S

LOL, I've seen geese attacking dogs before a few times. My nan and aunt used to keep some. They're a fair match for us too!

Yes, I've been in love, and know the pain that can result from it. So the jury is still out on that sentence; that's why I'm afraid.

  • Did your ex-gf say you were crap in bed or something?

By Blogger Andrew, at Wednesday, February 23, 2005 6:46:00 pm

  • Again with lowering the tone...

There is far more to a relationship than bedroom antics.

At least there should be. These days people forget that all to often, and reap what they sow as a consequence.

  • lol yeh....its cool to have a gf...id rather be with a girl that i get on with really well then some stupid bimbo...

By Blogger Andrew, at Thursday, February 24, 2005 5:25:00 pm

  • Why dont you try and win her back?

Knowing you your the type to write poems and stuff so why dont you? Go get tiger, grrrrrrrr! :P

By Blogger Andrew, at Thursday, February 24, 2005 7:21:00 pm

  • Personally, I can't see the point in being with anyone you don't really like. If sex is all people want there are probably easier ways.

As for the getting her back...

It has been quite a long time, and we've both moved on totally since then.

Wooing people isn't my strong point, so I try to avoid it where possible.

  • Very true, people should always be themselves.

    Thanks Steph. :)
